It's almost the 4th of July, and fireworks are just around the corner! And a day off right in the middle of the work week?? It's safe to say I'm super excited to spend the holiday on the lake , firecracker popsicle in hand 🙌
This year I'm teaming up with my friends at Bird + Stone to celebrate Independence Day in style with their latest cuff. Bird + Stone knows that the founding fathers wanted to build a country with democracy as its foundation, and in the words of Angelica Schuyler, it’s time to “include women in the sequel” *work!*
That’s why Bird + Stone decided to dedicate their newest accessory to women in politics. For every purchase of the “Who Run the World?” set, they will donate 10% of the cost to She Should Run “to expand the talent pool of women running for office, close the gender gap in politics by getting 250,000 women to run by 2030, and provide community, resources, and growth opportunities for aspiring political leaders”!
Even in 2018, women are dramatically underrepresented in politics. We make up 50.8% of the population, but only 20% of congress (the Center for American Women and Politics has a great tool for seeing these numbers broken down for all political offices, that you can check out here). It’s difficult for legislation to accurately reflect our country’s needs when half of citizens don’t see themselves reflected in the politicians themselves.
Luckily, more women are running for office than ever!
According to the New Yorker, as of April, 472 women had entered the race for the House of Representatives and 57 in the Senate. In 2012, that number was 298, and 36 respectively. The article also mentions the diversity of these women, saying “This year’s wave of female candidates has some striking features besides its sheer size. There is also a great deal of diversity within the group. It includes more women of color than previous electoral years, as well as a number of immigrants.”
You can see the full list of female candidates here.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg is famously quoted saying “There will be enough women on the Supreme Court when there are nine”. Men have unevenly represented this country for decades, so why is the idea of an all-female court so radical? It’s time for our government to represent our population, and time for women to close the gender gap in politics.
Because who runs the world? GIRLS

Last weekend I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Origin Salon | Spa for my first facial ever! I don't know what I've been doing with my life, but I have seriously been missing out! 😳If you haven't had a facial before, I highly recommend it (aka don't make the same mistake I did by going 23 years without trying it). I've never been so relaxed, and I came out feeling so refreshed and confident about my skin!
Since Origin is an Aveda salon, all of the products they use are high quality, all-natural and environmentally conscious. This is super important to me - there's nothing that feels ickier than rubbing a bunch of crazy chemicals into my hair and on my skin.
Even though I try to treat my skin well and avoid harsh products, I learned just how much room for improvement I really have. I struggle with combination skin - an oily nose and dry cheeks/forehead - that's difficult to keep balanced. My dry areas end up really flakey so I exfoliate frequently. What I didn't know, was that I was just making the problem worse by not giving my skin enough time to recover. Instead I was recommended to only exfoliate once per week at max, as opposed to every day or every other day. Luckily the facial helped restore some of the moisture I was missing, and I was able to grab my own bottle of the Intense Hydrating Masque so I can get the same soft skin from home.
From the moment I walked in the door, the ladies at Origin made me feel so comfortable. The salon space is bright and open, and the spa is quiet and soothing - just what I needed!

It's officially summer in Seattle and in celebration of all this sunshine, I've partnered with JCPenney to share a warm-weather look from Arizona Jean Company!
Arizona is a JCP-exclusive line available in juniors and plus, that makes tons of stylish and affordable pieces. I immediately fell in love with this romper, which is one of my favorite summer trends (I've been buying rompers and jumpsuits like crazy lately ?)!
This romper wraps in the front to create a skort look, which I wasn't sure about at first. I totally used to argue with my mom about not wanting to wear skorts as a kid, along with leggings and anything with polkadots. Luckily I've grown out it ? The wrap makes the style flirty and fun, but still really comfortable. Since summer days can be more active, wearing a romper can be easier than a dress or skirt - perfect for a bbq or day at the lake! I paired this one with a simple heeled sandal and some funky Rocksbox earrings for a date to the farmers market last weekend.
This romper comes in several colors and patterns which I've linked below, along with some other cute pieces I ordered from Arizona! Since the line is in the juniors department, I was sure to check the size charts. I'm ordered a medium in the romper and jacket, and a large in the top. The sandals run true to size.
Don't forget you can follow me on instagram and LIKEtoKNOWit @alhblog to shop my looks on the go!
Thank you to JCPenney and Arizona Jean Company for collaborating on this post. I received these products at no cost, but all opinions are my own.
Is there anything more exciting than receiving mail??? Honestly, probably not. I'm not sure if the love for snail mail is just another side affect of millennial nostalgia, but either way I'm 100% here for it - especially when it means getting a big box of goodies every season.
As you may have seen on instagram, I signed up for the FabFitFun subscription this spring. I've received other subscription boxes in the past, but was drawn to the variety in FabFitFun, as well as the value. The products are often full size, and you're guaranteed to get waaaay more than you spend. This month's box was valued at over $330!
I'm not always the best with surprises, and wanted to make sure I liked everything I received, so I decided to go with a "select" membership. By paying for a 1 year subscription up front, I'm able to customize my box with my preference for things like this month's beauty products!
The summer box is super fun, and I can't wait to try all of the products. I've already started doing a couple of my Orange Theory workouts from home using the resistance band, and am dying to find an excuse to break in my colorful new towel.
The other products I received in this box are

This week I'm really excited, because I am partnering with Bird + Stone to style a few pieces from their line of "jewelry with impact". Bird + Stone not only makes super cute accessories, but also focuses on building a world with gender equality. All of the pieces are ethically manufactured in New York, and each purchase gives back to a cause that supports their mission of female empowerment!
My favorite piece from their collection, is my "The Future is Female" cuff, which gives 10% of the proceeds to Planned Parenthood in order to fund preventative health and family planning services. Planned Parenthood also provides cancer screenings and sex education. As a PP donor and volunteer, I love being able to give continued support when I shop.
I also love this "Dream Builder" cuff, which funds micro-loans and financial training for women who struggle from poverty in rural Kenya. Bird + Stone helps these women start businesses and build their dreams.
In honor of this collaboration, I've decided to share some books about strong women that have empowered me!
Be sure to let me know if you read any of these books, and what you think! Also leave a comment if you have any suggestions for other books or resources that you've enjoyed, I'm always looking for a new read!
Thank you to Bird + Stone for partnering with me on this post! I received the jewelry at no cost, in exchange for this collaboration. You can learn more about the company and how they give back to the community on their site. As an added bonus, when you share your bracelet on Instagram, Bird + Stone doubles the donation to 20%!
